GMCL WOMEN & GIRLS COMPETITION RULES

 

4.20 GMCL Women’s Softball League                      

----- Management 

4.20.1. Title 

4.20.1.1. The title of the competition will be the GMCL Women’s Softball League, hereinafter known as GMCL WSBL.

4.20.2. Aim

4.20.2.1. A women’s only softball league for the enjoyment and fair play by all players.

4.20.3. Competition

4.20.3.1. The control of the competition shall be undertaken by the GMCL.

4.20.3.1.1. All decisions relating to these rules or matches played in the competition shall be final and binding.

----- Teams and Players

4.20.4. Eligibility 

4.20.4.1. All clubs who are affiliated with the Greater Manchester Cricket League are eligible to enter this competition.

4.20.4.2. Each team comprises of 8 players. A minimum of 6 players are needed to constitute a team.

4.20.4.2.1. If a team is short of players, other team members will be allowed to bat and bowl again. However, the selection of who will bat and bowl will be done at the start of the game by picking numbers out of a hat. 

4.20.4.3. Restrictions

4.20.4.3.1.. No substitutes will be allowed unless there has been an injury.

4.20.4.3.2. Players can only represent one team during the league. If clubs enter more than one team, the player must be registered to a specific team, not the club. 

4.20.4.3.3. A maximum of 3 ‘hardball players’ will be permitted per team.

4.20.4.3.3.1.A ‘hardball player’ is defined as any player who partakes in any hardball competition at any age group.

4.20.4.3. Age Restriction

4.20.4.7. Ideally, teams entering the league will contain all players over the age of 16, however, any player in year 8 or above at the time of competition will be allowed to play. No players below year 8 will be permitted to play unless they are a year 7 who plays county-level cricket and have a parent’s permission. 

----- Match Preparation

4.20.5. Cricket Balls and Stumps

4.20.5.1. Pink ECB Women’s Softball Incrediballs are to be used for the league throughout all rounds.

4.20.5.2. Plastic or wooden stumps are permitted to be used with bails, however both captains must agree on which is used before the start of the game.

4.20.6. Cricket Equipment, Clothing and footwear

4.20.6.1. It is recommended that the New Balance or GM softball bats be used by all players, however, wooden bats can be used if preferred.  

4.20.6.1.1.No other special equipment is required, ECB advise the following can be worn if required:

4.20.6.1.1.1. Helmets for Wicket Keepers (mandatory for those U19) 

4.20.6.1.1.2. Batting gloves 

4.20.6.1.1.3. Wicket keeper gloves 

4.20.6.2. All players will need to wear similar coloured team shirts – traditional cricket whites are not required for this league. 

4.20.6.3. Trainers should be suitable for all venues. Cricket boots are advised but not a necessity. 

4.20.7. Umpires and Scorers

4.20.7.1. Each team should provide a suitable person to umpire – this could be either: 

4.20.7.1.1. A qualified umpire.

4.20.7.1.2. An ECBACO member. 

4.20.7.1.3. A coach / non playing member of their club who is competent with the laws of cricket. 

4.20.7.2. It is the responsibility of each team to provide a nominated Scorer for all matches. Scorers should score the match electronically using play-cricket.

4.20.8. Fixtures

4.20.8.1. Fixtures can be rearranged if agreed by both captains before the day of the match. 

4.20.8.1.1. If both teams do not agree to rearrange, the team unable to fulfil the fixture must forfeit.

4.20.8.1.2. The new fixture date must be within 14 days of the original date.

4.20.8.1.3. If the fixture is not completed before the 14-day cut-off, 0 points will be awarded to both teams. 

----- In-Play Regulations

4.20.9. Playing Conditions

4.20.9.1. Laws 

4.20.9.1.1. All matches shall be played under the MCC Laws of Cricket and amended from time to time with the following exceptions.

4.20.9.2. The Start

4.20.9.2.1. The two teams toss a coin to decide which team has the choice of either batting or fielding first.

4.20.9.3. The General Rules

4.20.9.3.1. The length of the pitch will be 20 yards.

4.20.9.3.2. The boundary will depend on the limitations of the ground but at least 30 yards.

4.20.9.3.3. Throughout the League, each game shall consist of one innings per team, each innings to be 16 overs long. This may be reduced to 12 or 8 overs if weather conditions are poor or if there is an issue with time (e.g. ground needed for a senior game). 

4.20.9.3.4. All matches and innings must be fully completed – regardless of the second innings exceeding the required total. 

4.20.9.4. Batting Regulations

4.20.9.4.1. The batting side shall start the match on 200 runs.

4.20.9.4.2. Batters will be divided into pairs, each pair batting for 4 overs (16 over games),3 overs (12 over games) or 2 overs (8 over games). 

4.20.9.4.3. At the end of each over – the batters will swap ends to alternate the strike.

4.20.9.4.4. If a batter is “out” the team will lose 5 runs and the batters will switch ends. (if a batter is run out they will need to go to the non-striking end).

4.20.9.4.5. A batter may be out in line with MCC Laws excluding LBW and being timed out. 

4.20.9.5. Bowling & fielding regulations

4.20.9.5.1. Players can bowl a maximum of 2 overs (8 over games),3 overs (12 over games) or 4 overs (16 over games). A minimum of 5 bowlers must bowl per innings.

4.20.9.5.1.1. For the sake of clarity – if a bowler has to complete part of an over (IE. Injury to another bowler),this shall be deemed as a full over on their allocation limit.

4.20.9.5.2. Bowling will switch ends after 8 overs (16 over games). Or bowling will take place from one end only (12 and 8 over games).

4.20.9.5.3. Bowling can be underarm or overarm however, please encourage overarm bowling where possible. 

4.20.9.5.4. No Balls and Wides

4.20.9.5.4.1. Any ball which passes the batter in her normal stance above waist height without bouncing shall be a no ball. 

4.20.9.5.4.2. Any ball which bounces more than once prior to reaching the batter shall also be a no ball. 

4.20.9.5.4.3.. No extra balls will be allocated for wides or no-balls, except in the final over for each pair when an extra ball will be bowled for every no-ball or wide to a maximum of 4 extra balls.

4.20.9.5.5. Fielders must be a safe distance from the batters, at least 10 yards..

4.20.9.6. An Over

4.20.9.6.1. An over consists of 6 balls (up to a maximum of 10 in the final over for each pair).

4.20.9.7. Byes/Leg Byes

4.20.9.7.1. If a batter misses the ball, or if it hits their body, they may still run and score byes/leg byes.

4.20.9.8. Scoring

4.20.9.8.1. Batters will be given 1 run for every completed ‘physical run’.

4.20.9.8.2. If a wide or no ball is bowled – 2 runs are given for the delivery, and in the last over of every pair those deliveries will also be re-bowled. 

4.20.9.8.3. Boundaries scored as laws of the game. 

4.20.9.9. Bad Weather

4.20.9.9.1. In games where weather issues are involved, there will be no DLS necessary. If the game is paused at any time, it will continue where it left off.

4.20.9.10. Injury

4.20.9.10.1. In case of serious injury, the game should be abandoned, and 2 points will be awarded to each team. 

4.20.9.10.2. Umpires are to determine the severity of said injury and whether the game should continue. 

4.20.9.10.2.1. If the umpires cannot come to an agreement, the game shall be abandoned. 

----- After the Match

4.20.10. Results

4.20.10.1. Win

4.20.10.1.1.  3 points will be awarded for a win (team with the most runs).

4.20.10.2. Forfeit

4.20.10.2.1.  3 points will be awarded to the opposing team if a game is forfeited, 0 points will be awarded to the forfeiting team.

4.20.10.3. Tie

4.20.10.3.1.  2 points will be awarded for a tie (runs tied).

4.20.10.4. Rained off

4.20.10.4.1.  2 points will be awarded for a rained-off game.

4.20.10.5. Loss

4.20.10.5.1.  1 point will be awarded for a loss.

4.20.11. End of Season 

4.20.11.1. At the end of the league stage, the team with the most points will be the winner

4.20.11.2. if there are two or more teams with the same number of points, the following shall apply:

4.20.11.2.1. The team that has scored the most runs in total throughout the competition shall be the winner.

4.20.11.2.2. If this is also equal, the team that has lost the fewest wickets in total throughout the competition shall be the winner.

4.20.11.2.3. If the above fails to determine a winner, then a bowl out will take place. 

4.20.11.2.3.1. Captains shall nominate before the start of the bowl out which 4 players will bowl. 

4.20.11.2.3.2. All 4 will bowl 2 balls each and the team that hits the wickets the most will be declared the winner. If still equal, then it will be sudden death to decide the winner. Sudden death will consist of the 4 chosen bowlers, bowling once alternatively until the winner is decided.
